Must novice drivers display N-plates when driving a taxi?

The answer is yes. Novice drivers are obliged by law to display N-plates when they drive a taxi in Ireland. For a period of two years after receiving the first category B full driving licence, the licence holder is considered a novice driver.
According to the Road Safety Authority, a person granted a first full driving licence from the 1st of August 2014 must display N-plates on the vehicle for a period of 2 years, and during that period display them on any other vehicle in respect of which they get a driving licence, including a taxi.
To drive a taxi, limousine, or hackney in Ireland it is necessary to obtain an SPSV Licence. A driver must have been holding their full driving licence issued in Ireland or another EU/EEA member state for at least 12 months before they can apply for an SPSV Licence.
The first step to apply for an SPSV Licence – and the most difficult one – is to pass the SPSV Exam. This is where Taxischool can help.
